Since Just Add Water Ltd. acquired the rights to the Oddworld series, they have been working on a number of titles. They released a HD remake of Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath in December 2011 and are now working on a HD remake of Oddworld: Much’s Oddysee.

However, JAW aren’t just making HD remakes, as they have today announced that an Abe’s Oddysee reboot would be released in Summer 2013, via their Facebook page.

We decided to reboot it, not just an HD update to the original PS1 title, this is a NEW game. It will be getting it’s first public showing LATER this year, with a release date of NEXT summer (2013).

Klei Entertainment have revealed the release date, price and story details for the sequel to their 2010 beat ‘em up ‘Shank’.

The news comes in an EA press release, detailing various aspects of the games release. Shank 2 will be released on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade on the 8th of February 2012. It will cost €9.99 and 800 Microsoft Points respectively. PC gamers will be able to play it from the 7th of February, but the specific DRM options haven’t been detailed.

The release also detailed some gameplay aspects:

Set in a pulp fiction world, Shank 2 puts players back in control of their favorite ex-mobster hitman, Shank. Klei has evolved the combat experience with precise controls, new weapons, smarter enemies, and more advanced combo techniques, all set to the backdrop of beautiful 2D art and animation. Players can put Shank’s trusty arsenal of handguns, chainsaws, grenades, plus all-new weapons to use in order to protect those close to him.

Introducing an all-new Survival Mode, gamers can team up with a friend online or locally, working together to take down hordes of goons in an action-packed, arcade-style brawl. Featuring stunning visuals from Klei’s veteran cartoon director, Jeff Agala, Shank 2 raises the bar even higher for 2D brawlers with art and animation that won Klei multiple awards and nominations, including IGF’s Excellence in Visual Arts nomination, and the Canadian Animator of the Year award for Klei’s lead animator, Aaron Bouthillier.

Some gameplay videos can be found at the official Shank website.

I don’t usually pay much attention to Xbox Live exclusive games, but 2 caught my eye last year. The first was Super Meat Boy, and the second was Limbo. Limbo has interested me ever since I saw the first screenshot, and I have wanted it to come to the PS3 for a while.

In June this year, that finally happened.

The story in Limbo is a tricky subject. You won’t watch any cutscenes, hear any dialogue or even read a single line of text (excluding the menu) in the game, and so you don’t really know what you’re looking for.

You play as an un-named boy, represented by a sillhouette with 2 white dots for eyes. As you go through the game, you’ll find that danger is lurking around every corner, and you’ll have to take on traps, huge creatures and fiendish puzzles to find whatever you’re looking for.

This is a really interesting way to approach the story. The player’s mind will automatically try to fill in the gaps to explain why you’re there and what is happening, but you won’t get any explaination from the game itself.

The game takes place in a number of settings, all in black & white but totally different in terms of features. You start in the forest and move on into other, more dangerous locations.

Each location also brings different gameplay elements. While the puzzles in the forest are quite simple, the ones later on, involving gravity switches, crates, buttons and more will challenge you and you’ll probably die a lot in the process.

Unfortunately, the games main problem is the playtime. You’ll get around 2-3 hours from one playthrough, and that’s with numerous deaths and puzzle mishaps included. It is frankly just too short for a game worth £10.

The gameplay is brilliant. It’s varied, challenging, unique, and the controls are incredibly simple. Even when you haven’t been briefed on how to use something, you’ll know how to use it, and that truly is an accomplishment.

While you’ll be taking your time to carefully complete puzzles in one section, you’ll also be rushing and panicing in adrenaline-pumping sections. An example of this is where you see a huge spider near teh start of the game, and you’ll need to kill it before it kills you.

Visually, the game looks stunning. The animations and use of colour really makes this game a work of art, and that’s something that cannot be said for many games.

I didn’t stumble upon a single bug or glitch during my playthrough, proving that the game is incredibly well-polished. Everything works as it should with no hassle.

You may want to replay the game a few times, most likely to earn trophies or unlock the PS3/PC-exclusive bonus level, but there really isn’t much replay value beyond that. This game excells in practically every field, but the length really lets it down.

Overall, Limbo is a great game with stunning visuals, fun an challenging gameplay, an incredible amount of polish and innovative approach to story. The game is let down, however, by its length and value.

You may remember the first Tales From Space game, ‘About a Blob’, which was released on the Playstation Store earlier this year. The game was a co-op platformer starring 2 blobs who like to eat.

Well, now DrinkBox Studios have announced the sequel to About a Blob called ‘Mutant Blobs Attack!’.

The game will be available for the Playstation Vita. No date has been announced, but a playable build will be at this years Penny Arcade Expo at the Drinkbox Studios booth.

Not much information on the game has been revealed, but Chris McQuinn, designer at DrinkBox, said the following:

The control systems available on the PlayStation®Vita have allowed us to experiment with all kinds of new gameplay possibilities. We’re finding that touch controls in particular can be used to complement traditional thumb-stick puzzle-platforming very well.

We learned a lot developing our first game – we want to use that experience to deliver the best game we can in Mutant Blobs Attack.

The only asset released so far is a render of the new character in the game, which you can see over at the new Mutant Blobs Attack! website.
